Fake tense in Hausa counterfactuals: A novel argument for underspecified EXCL
نویسندگان
چکیده
The paper presents a novel argument from Hausa (Chadic) for the analysis of counterfactual fake tense in terms lexically underspecified EXCL-operator (Iatridou 2000). Evidence comes facts (i.) that has no obligatory inflectional marking on verb; and (ii.) temporal anteriority counterfactuality are both expressed by left-peripheral operator element with segmental shape daa, which is then tonally disambiguated to dâa dàa, respectively. cast von Prince's (2019) modified branching-world model counterfactuals.

An Underspecified Tense in St’át’imcets
The first goal of this paper is to determine whether superficially ‘tenseless’ sentences like (1b) contain a covert tense morpheme; I will argue that they do. The second goal is to determine what the semantics of that tense morpheme is. I will propose that (1b) contains a phonologically null tense morpheme which is lexically underspecified with respect to whether the reference time precedes or ...
متن کاملFake Tense in Conditional Sentences A modal approach
Many languages allow for ”fake” uses of their past tense marker: the marker can occur in certain contexts without conveying temporal pastness. Instead it appears to bear a modal meaning. Iatridou [2000] has coined this phenomenon Fake Tense. Fake Tense is particularly common to conditional construction. This paper proposes to explain Fake Tense in English conditional sentences as a certain kind...
متن کاملTense, Aspect, and Argument Structure
This paper is concerned with an intriguing difference between Japanese and English involving the progressive form be V-ing and the -te iru form as well as the passive constructions in the two languages. Some of the complex semantic properties of the -te iru construction in Japanese are discussed in Ogihara (1998), where I present a proposal to account for the multiple interpretations associated...
متن کاملFactoring Predicate Argument and Scope Semantics: Underspecified Semantics with LTAG
In this paper we propose a compositional semantics for lexicalized tree-adjoining grammar (LTAG). Tree-local multicomponent derivations allow separation of the semantic contribution of a lexical item into one component contributing to the predicate argument structure and a second component contributing to scope semantics. Based on this idea a syntax-semantics interface is presented where the co...
